FAQ

What is nin: deviations?

A fan-built archive cataloging every Nine Inch Nails song, version, and recording: what exists, how versions differ, and where each one can be found.

What's the difference between a song, version, and recording?

A song is a musical work (e.g. "Piggy"). A version is a specific arrangement or remix of that song (e.g. "Piggy - Album Version", "Piggy (Nothing Can Stop Me Now)"). A recording is a specific audio capture of a version (e.g. the 1994 original mix, the 2004 remaster).

One song can have many versions, and each version can have multiple recordings.

What releases are covered?

Albums, EPs, singles, compilations, soundtracks, remix albums, promos, and select bootlegs.

Are live performances included?

Live versions are tracked when they have been officially released, appear on select bootlegs, or are the only known recording of a song (e.g. covers like "The Beautiful People" or songs with no studio recording like "Now I'm Nothing"). For comprehensive bootleg live recordings, see The Nine Inch Nails Live Archive.

Are unreleased songs included?

No. Only songs that have been released in some form are included. Rumored or unreleased songs that haven't seen the light of day are not tracked.

When are bootlegs included?

When they capture unreleased material believed to be legitimate such as the only known recording or a significantly different arrangement.

What's the difference between a release and an edition?

A release is the abstract concept (e.g. "The Downward Spiral"). An edition is a specific physical or digital product (e.g. "1994 US CD", "2010 vinyl reissue"). Labels and catalog numbers attach to editions, not releases.
